Vienna is a true pastry capital — so many decadent treats to try, and so little time!
During the Christmas season, the city becomes an edible fairytale: warm spices, roasted chestnuts, chocolate, vanilla, and the comforting aroma of freshly baked pastries.
If you are visiting during Advent or simply want to discover traditional Austrian sweets, here are 10 Viennese Christmas desserts that taste most like the holiday season to us. 🥰
1. Apfelstrudel with Vanilla Sauce
No visit to Vienna is complete without Apfelstrudel, and Christmas is the perfect time to enjoy it warm with creamy vanilla sauce. We especially love it at Gerstner, where the regal ambience turns this classic into a full experience. The flaky dough, soft apples, cinnamon, and vanilla come together like a warm winter hug.
2. Punschkrapfen
If a dessert could define Austrian Christmas, it might be Punschkrapfen. A pink cube of sponge cake filled with nougat and jam, lightly soaked in rum, and covered in fondant.
It’s nostalgic, festive, and always a crowd-pleaser — especially during Advent.
3. Krapfen
Vienna’s version of the doughnut, soft and pillowy and traditionally filled with apricot jam. During Christmas you will find variations with chocolate, vanilla cream, nougat, or festive fillings. We love the organic ones at Öfferl, but you will also find them at Christmas markets and other bakeries.
4. Christmas-Inspired Pastries at Crème de la Crème (8th District)
For a more modern take, head to patisserie Crème de la Crème in the 8th district. Their holiday creations feature winter spices, nuts, citrus, dark chocolate, and beautiful decorations — delicate pastries that look like tiny, edible Christmas ornaments.
5. Gingerbread & Traditional Viennese Christmas Cookies
Austrian Weihnachtskekse deserve their own spotlight. Besides Lebkuchen (gingerbread), you’ll find countless cookie varieties that appear only at Christmas. Some of our favorites include:
- Vanillekipferl — the ultimate must-try vanilla crescent
- Linzercookies — jam-filled, buttery classics
- Zimtsterne — fragrant cinnamon stars
- Kokosbusserl — coconut kisses that melt in your mouth
- Rumkugeln (rum balls)
You can buy beautiful assortments at bakeries, artisan pastry shops, and even supermarkets for more budget-friendly options.
6. Kaiserschmarrn (To-Go at Demel)
Fluffy, caramelized, shredded pancake sprinkled with powdered sugar — one of the most iconic Austrian desserts – Kaiser’s favorite!
We love getting Kaiserschmarrn to-go from Demel and snacking on it while strolling through the historic center under the Christmas lights. Comfort food at its best.
7. Guglhupf
Elegant, traditional, and deeply connected to Austrian baking culture. Guglhupf is a moist, ring-shaped cake that comes in versions with raisins, chocolate, nuts, or marzipan. During Christmas it makes an ideal holiday gift — or a perfect sweet breakfast.
8. Stollen
A Christmas treat dating back to the 14th century.
Stollen is dense, rich, and fragrant, packed with dried fruits, nuts, spices, and sometimes marzipan, dusted generously with powdered sugar.
It lasts long, which makes it great as an edible souvenir or something to enjoy with morning coffee. You can get it at specialized stores with sweets, but also at pretty much any supermarket at this time of the year. For premium quality, super market versions, you can head to Gourmet Spar or Billa Corso.
9. Germknödel & Büchteln
These warm, dough-based desserts belong together because they share the comforting essence of Austrian winter baking. They have a similar concept, but are made in a different way – Germknödel is steamed, while Büchteln gets baked. Both are truly delicious.
Germknödel
A large, fluffy yeast dumpling filled with Powidl (plum butter), traditionally topped with melted butter, or vanilla sauce, and a poppy seed–sugar mixture. It’s especially popular in winter and ski season — rich, soft, and incredibly comforting. You can get it at Christmas markets.
Büchteln
Soft baked yeast buns, usually filled with jam (traditionally plum jam), served warm with vanilla sauce. Buchteln feel like homemade comfort and are perfect on a cold December day when you want something simple, nostalgic, and soothing. Cafe Hawelka is iconic for their freshly baked Büchteln, but it gets packed so make sure to plan your visit ahead.
10. Maronitorte (Chestnut Cake)
To finish the list, we had to include a proper Viennese cake — and nothing tastes more like winter in Vienna than Maronitorte.
Light sponge layers filled with sweet chestnut cream, delicately flavored, elegant, and absolutely irresistible. If you want a cake that embodies the atmosphere of Viennese Advent cafés, this is the one.
